Tascam launch DR-10L Pro field recorder

Updated device offers 32-bit floating point recording

Tascam’s latest release builds on their popular DR-10L, combining a lavalier microphone with an ultra-compact field recorder, providing a simple and unobtrusive way to capture dialogue with a quick setup time and the reliability of a wired connection. To add to the convenience, the improved DR-10L Pro also uses 32-bit floating point technology, allowing users to capture a huge dynamic range without the need to keep an eye on gain levels to avoid clipping.

The recorder itself measures 53 x 51 x 21 mm, and weighs just 65g with a pair of AAA batteries fitted, making it easy to hide away in pockets or costume for applications where recording equipment needs to be kept out of sight. Depending on the recording format and type of batteries used, the device is capable of operating for up to 24.5 hours, meaning it can be left in place for an entire day if necessary.

The DR-10L Pro is capable of recording to 16-, 24- or 32-bit floating point BWF WAV files at either 44.1 or 48 kHz, as well as 128 or 192 kb/s MP3 files at the same sample rates. As for recording media, the device will accept microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards, supporting up to 512GB of storage space, and a USB-C socket provides connectivity with a computer for data transfer, if required.

A built-in switchable high-pass filter is present, and the record button utilises a sliding switch with a lock function to prevent accidental operation. A high-contrast display provides key information such as record status and battery level, and a 3.5mm mini-jack headphone output allows users to monitor the recorder’s input or play back recorded files.

The supplied lavalier microphone connects to the recorder via a 3.5mm mini-jack socket with a locking collar, and is capable of withstanding a maximum SPL of 115dB. Frequency response for the DR-10L Pro is specified as ±1dB between 20Hz and 20kHz, with a distortion figure of 0.01% measured at 1kHz with an input level of -21dBV.

An optional AK-BT1 Bluetooth adapter can be used to provide connectivity with Tascam’s DR-10L Pro CONNECT app, which is capable of controlling and providing visual monitoring of the status of up to five DR-10L Pros. The app also makes it possible to assign unique names to each of the units, as well as embed metadata such as project and scene names, or take numbers, into the recording files.
