Mix Rescue: Joe Murphy | Media

Mixing & Recording Advice By Matt Houghton
Published September 2010

The audio files accompany the Mix Rescue that appeared in SOS September 2010.

The 'MixRescueHighlights' ZIP file contains a number of audio files which are intended to accompany this month's Mix Rescue of Joe Murphy's track, 'Casting Shadows' (/sos/sept10/articles/mixrescue-0910.htm). The final remix contained rather too many tracks for it to be practical to include all of the multitrack files, so instead I've picked out a few illustrative highlights, which you should be able to line up in your own DAW.

The titles of the audio files should be pretty self-explanatory, but here's a quick run-down:

Mixes

CastingShadowsOriginal

Joe's original mix of 'Casting Shadows', as supplied when he applied for the Mix Rescue treatment.

CastingShadowsMHRemix

My final mix of 'Casting Shadows', before mastering.

CastingShadowsMHRemixMastered

My remix, as mastered by Colm O'Rourke.

Send Effects

Rather than only supply theusual 'before and after' files, I thought it would be useful to show just how much of the feel of this track was achieved using a blend of different send effects:

CastingShadowsMHRemixLexRoomReverb

This is the stereo bounce from the Lexicon room reverb patch I used in the remix.

CastingShadowsMHRemixLexHallReverb

This is the stereo bounce from the Lexicon hall reverb patch I used in the remix.

CastingShadowsMHRemixAltiverb

This is the stereo bounce from the AudioEase Altiverb patch I used in the remix — it used the same settings as that Joe had used, but I sent different parts to it in different amounts.

CastingShadowsMHRemixUAPlate140Reverb

This is the stereo bounce from the Universal Audio UAD Plate 140 reverb patch I used in the remix.

CastingShadowsMHRemixTCMegaverb

This is the stereo bounce from the TC Electronic reverb patch I used in the remix. Initially I set this up for the snare, but used if for some other elements as the mix progressed.

CastingShadowsMHRemixPSP84delay

This is the stereo bounce from the PSP Audioware PSP84 delay patch I used in the remix.

CastingShadowsMHRemixCubaseStereoDelay

This is the stereo bounce from Cubase's in-built Stereo Delay plug-in, which I set up as another send effect.

Vocals

LVoxBefore

The lead vocal part as supplied by Joe.

LVoxAfter

The lead vocal as processed in my remix.

BVoxBefore

The backing vocal part as it appeared in the original version.

BVoxAfter

The backing vocals as used in the remix — although do note that I also made extensive use of send effects to get the final result.

Acoustic Guitars

AcGitPickBefore

The picked acoustic guitar from the intro, as suplied by Joe.

AcGitRhythmBefore

The acoustic guitar rhythm part, as supplied by Joe.

AcGitsAfter

Both acoustic guitar parts, as presented in my remix — but without the send effects. As you can hear, these are much brighter, and there's much more emphasis on the transient, to help them cut through the rest of the mix.

Electric Guitars

ElecGitChorusRiffBefore

The electric guitar riff that appears during the choruses, as supplied by Joe.

ElecGitGuitChorusRhythmBefore

The electric guitar rhythm part that appears during the choruses, as supplied by Joe.

ElecGuitSlideBefore

The electric slide guitar riff, as supplied by Joe.

ElecGuitVerseBefore

The electric guitar rhythm that appears during the verses, as supplied by Joe.

ElecGuitVerseRiffBefore

The electric guitar riff that appears during the verses, as supplied by Joe.

ElecGitsGrpAfter

The various guitar parts routed through the Guitars stereo bus in my remix. The send effects don't appear here, but are supplied in a separate file.
