When using digital equipment, it's important to make sure that everything is running from the same clock source.
I am trying to transfer music from an Alesis ADAT via an optical output into a MOTU 2408 digital recording interface, and thence into Logic Platinum 4.6 running on an Apple G4. I get the message "Error while trying to synch Audio and MIDI sample rate, 24011 recognised. Check conflict between Logic and external devices." The ADATs have been recorded at 44.1kHz and I have the PCI 324 Console software set accordingly, I think. It is the first time I've tried using an ADAT and I'm beat. Any ideas?

Simon Stock, of MOTU's UK distributor MusicTrack, replies: It sounds as if the 2408 and PCI 324 are not getting clock from the ADAT. When you're connecting two digital audio devices, it is essential that they are both running from the same clock source; it is not enough to merely set them to the same sample rate, as one machine's version of a second will be very slightly different from another's. The simplest way to achieve sync is to set one as the Master and the other as a Slave. In your scenario, I would recommend leaving the ADAT as the Master clock, but setting the 2408/PCI 324 to clock to whichever ADAT Optical Bank the ADAT is connected to. This should be done in Logic Audio, in the Audio Drivers window. If your ADAT is connected to Bank A, the correct Clock Source setting should be "ADAT Optical Bank A."
You can check that the 2408 is receiving clock by looking at the front panel: one of the two sample‑rate LEDs (44.1 or 48k) should be lit solidly. If both are flashing, it is not receiving clock.
