Tone2 Audiosoftware update Icarus soft synth

New filters, waveforms, modulation routings & much more

Tone2 Icarus 3 software synthesizer wavetable FM subtractive additive granular

Tone2 Audiosoftware have announced the largest ever update for Icarus, adding a huge range of new features to the popular software instrument which they claim is the most powerful synthesizer on the market.

The previous version of the instrument already boasted an impressive set of features, packing in a huge range of synthesis methods along with an extensive collection of filter types, a dedicated drum sequencer, a wavetable editor and much more. Despite its complexity, Icarus has been designed with user experience in mind, with the company ensuring its capabilities easily accessible via a friendly-looking interface that offers plenty of instant visual feedback.

Icarus 3 introduces another two analogue-modelled low-pass filter types, bringing the count to 65, while the modulation system has been treated to a number of upgrades that include new sources and targets and enhanced randomise functionality that can now target the LFOs, arpeggiator and effects sections. The. VST3 and AU versions of the synth now boast MPE support for those with compatible controllers/DAWs.

Granular and additive synthesis engines have been introduced, and the existing FM capabilities have been expanded, with Tone2 keen to point out that the FM engine does not suffer from any significant aliasing. New supersaw and hypersaw waveforms have also been added to the existing engines. With the addition of the latest modes, the instrument’s total number of synthesis types stands at 62!

Version 3 also introduces a number of new effects types, overhauls much of the instrument’s GUI and implements a multitude of improvements to both the sound quality and system resource usage. The extent of the update really is astounding — a full list detailing all of the new features can be found here.

Icarus 3 is supported on PCs running Windows 7 and above, and Macs running macOS 10.12 or higher. VST, VST3 and AU plug-in versions are available, along with a standalone application.
