SoundGhost Jumble: Innovative creative sampler

Create new sounds with randomised sample position playback

SoundGhost Jumble random sample playback plug-in VST3 AU

Described as a randomised sample explorer, the latest plug-in from SoundGhost aims to provide users with a simple way to discover new and interesting patterns and soundscapes. Jumble’s playhead shifts between random positions in each loaded sample, producing unpredictable results that can then be treated further with a collection of onboard modulation and effects processing.

The sampler is built around an internal gate which moves the playhead to random parts of the loaded sample, at a rate that is synchronised to the tempo of the host DAW. Incoming MIDI notes will trigger playback, and the playback behaviour can then be altered by assigning gate length and jumble rate parameters. There’s also an option to introduce octave jumps at random intervals to create melodic variations, and a Manual mode that deactivates the gate entirely, resulting in the playhead only moving when MIDI notes are received — SoundGhost recommend pairing the mode with arpeggiators and sequencers to trigger interesting playhead jumping patterns.

The patterns produced can be processed with a range of built-in effects, shaping tools and a modulation system. A state-variable filter section is followed by adjustable in and out fade times for the triggered sample, whilst some time-based effects are provided by dedicated delay and reverb sections. The bottom of the GUI then houses a pair of LFOs that make it possible to add some tempo-sync’able movement to the filter’s cutoff and amp section’s gain parameter.

A collection of over 40 presets are included to provide a starting point and demonstrate Jumble’s capabilities, and users are free to create, store and categorise their own patches.
